The sea is at its warmest (often warmer than August), the heat is still proper summer but no longer relentless, and the summer crowds start thinning after the first week. Schools in much of Europe are back, so families leave the beaches. September is for swimmers who want warm water without peak-August stress, for cultural visitors who could not face July, and for anyone who likes long warm evenings.

Year to year: Late summer now extends effectively into late September. Sea is often warmer than in August (it lags by a few weeks), and the first proper autumn break has been arriving later in recent years.
Crowds & timing
Moderate. Noticeably quieter than August from mid-month onwards. Beaches more manageable, restaurants easier to book, Valletta calmer. Cruise season ramps up, so waterfront Valletta and Vittoriosa can be busy on cruise days.

Last proper beach days with warm water
The sea is actually at its warmest in September. Crowds have thinned. This is arguably the best beach month of the year.
Feast of Our Lady of Victories (September 8)
A historical feast marking victories over Ottoman sieges. Valletta and Xagħra on Gozo are particularly significant, with a regatta in the Grand Harbour.
Malta Literary Festival (mid to late September)
Outdoor readings and events at Fort St Elmo and around Valletta. Free or low cost, and a different flavour of cultural evening.
Cultural sites back into comfortable hours
Valletta, Mdina, and the prehistoric temples are at a much better temperature than July or August. Full opening hours still in force.
Notte Bianca (usually late September or early October)
Valletta's white night. Museums, galleries, and streets open late with performances through the night. Check the current year's date.
What to skip or plan around
Don't leave beach swimming to the very last week
The sea is warm, but early autumn fronts can bring wind and the first rains. The first two weeks of September are the safest bet.
Don't expect festa nightlife everywhere
L-Imnarja and the big summer feasts have passed. Village nightlife settles back to normal, though Our Lady of Victories brings a notable spike.
Don't assume Malta is on winter prices
Accommodation does not drop until late September. The first two weeks are still firmly in season.
