May is when Malta tips into summer without paying the full summer price. Temperatures become reliably warm (days in the low twenties, bright sunshine almost daily), the sea starts becoming swimmable from mid-month for most visitors, and evenings are long and pleasantly cool. The countryside turns from green to golden through the month, festa season kicks off, and village life picks up pace. It is still a realistic window for cultural walking without heat fatigue.

Year to year: Warming trend is real: first 25°C+ days now often arrive by mid-May, earlier than a decade ago. Late May can feel early-summer rather than shoulder season.

Moderate and rising through the month. Valletta and Sliema get noticeably busier from mid-May as summer season opens. Beaches and Gozo still feel calm until the final week.
What to prioritise in May
First proper beach days
Swimming becomes realistic for most visitors from mid-May. Early May beach days are wonderful for walking and shallow wading; late May works for full beach days. Għajn Tuffieħa, Golden Bay, and Blue Lagoon on Comino all come into play.
Village festas start
Festa (village feast) season kicks off in May. Fireworks, brass bands, illuminated churches, local food stalls, and village-wide celebrations that run three or four days. Several smaller villages run early-season festas through the month. Check dates the week of your visit.
Outdoor cultural
Mdina, Valletta, Ħaġar Qim, and other archaeological sites are still comfortable for daytime visits before the heat properly sets in. Make the most of it.
Gozo comes back into full-day play
Fast ferries running proper frequencies, boat tours to Comino starting up, and Gozo hiking still excellent before heat peaks. One or two nights based there works particularly well.
Evenings out
Evenings are long and warm, ideal for Marsaxlokk or Mġarr harbour dinners. Rooftop bars open for the season. Sunset from Dingli Cliffs is at its most enjoyable.

Don't assume peak-summer heat yet
Early May days can still be cool enough in the shade to need a layer. Late May is properly warm. Plan for both.
Don't leave the last week of May to chance
It is effectively the start of high season for Valletta and Sliema. Prices rise and availability tightens. Book ahead if your dates fall there.
Don't overlook wind
Calm days dominate, but a surprise westerly can ruin a beach day on the north coast. Check the forecast the morning of.
