March is Malta's transition from quiet winter to open spring. Days lengthen noticeably, the air warms up without becoming hot, and the countryside is at its most alive before the summer sun takes over. In some years Holy Week and Easter fall in late March, in which case the final week runs at Easter-week intensity. Otherwise, March is shoulder season at its best: warm walking weather, reasonable prices, and cultural sites nearly to yourself.
Weather at a glance

- Sea
- 15 to 16°C

- Wind
- Variable spring fronts. Strong northwesterlies still possible, particularly in the first half of the month. Calmer spells lengthen toward April.
Year to year: Highly variable. March can deliver near-summer warmth (high teens to low twenties) or prolonged cool rain. Sea temperatures are slower to rise than air; patience pays off for swimmers.
Crowds & timing
Low to moderate. One of the quieter months, except in years when Easter falls in late March, when the last week runs at peak prices. Cities still feel open; countryside and Gozo are quiet.
What to prioritise in March
Catch the countryside at its greenest
Spring wildflowers peak in mid to late March. The Majjistral Nature Park, the Dingli Cliffs, and the Xlendi to Sannat coast walks on Gozo are all at their best. Longer daylight means a proper day of walking is realistic again.
Cultural sites without crowds
Valletta, Mdina, St John's Co-Cathedral, the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra prehistoric temples. You will still beat the summer queues by a long way. Opening hours are back to near full.
Gozo for a long weekend
Gozo's inland paths and quiet villages are spectacular in March, with almond blossom tailing off and wildflowers taking over. Two nights in Xagħra or Nadur, a walk to Wied il-Għasri, and a slow dinner in Victoria is an easy pattern.
Spring birdwatching
Mid to late March is a strong spring migration window. Għadira and Salini nature reserves see visible passages of waders and raptors. Stop in at the Għadira visitor centre for the latest.
Seasonal food
Spring greens arrive at the markets. Fresh ġbejniet (Gozo sheep cheese) from spring milk and wild rabbit dishes at traditional village restaurants are both at their best. Marsaxlokk's Sunday market finds its spring rhythm.
What to skip or plan around
Don't count on swimming
The sea is warming in principle but you will not swim in it. Beach walks and wading are fine; proper swim days should wait.
Don't assume Malta-in-summer hours
Some attractions still run shortened winter schedules until Easter. Check before planning a tight itinerary.
Don't plan late March without checking Easter dates
If Easter falls in late March (it sometimes does), the whole week runs at peak prices and needs to be booked well ahead.

The local verdict
March is arguably Malta's best value shoulder month. Spring weather without peak pressure, the countryside in bloom, and cultural sites ready to be explored properly. The only caveat is the sea, which is not yet ready for swimming.
