On paper it is a shoulder month; in practice it is one of Malta's busier months, thanks to cruise season, major cultural festivals, warm-but-not-hot weather, and a sea that is still comfortably swimmable through most of the month. Days are warm, evenings are lovely, and the events calendar is full. If you come expecting empty streets, you will be surprised. If you come expecting a lively but comfortable month, October delivers in full.

Year to year: First proper rains can arrive any time from mid to late October; some years stay almost completely dry. October 2023 was the driest October on record (just 0.2mm), a remarkable outlier compared with the long-term average around 75mm.
Crowds & timing
Busier than most visitors expect. Cruise season is at its peak, and festival weekends (Notte Bianca, Birgufest, Mediterranja) fill Valletta, Birgu, and Gozo with both visitors and locals. Beaches stay calm; cities can feel lively.
What to prioritise in October
Birgufest / Nocturnal Birgu
Early October. The city of Vittoriosa (Birgu) is lit only by candlelight for three evenings. Extraordinary atmosphere, one of the most memorable cultural events on the calendar.
Notte Bianca
Usually falls in early October. Valletta's museums, galleries, and streets come alive at night. Free but crowded, so go with that in mind.
Mediterranja Food Festival
Mid to late October. Celebration of Maltese and Mediterranean food in Valletta and on Gozo. Excellent food stalls, tastings, and associated events.
Last beach days
The first half of October still offers proper beach weather and swimmable sea. Make the most of it before mid-month and the first autumn fronts.
Cultural explorations at ideal temperature
Mdina, Valletta, and historic sites are at their most comfortable for walking. Opening hours still at peak-season levels. Cruise-day Valletta is the only thing to watch for.
What to skip or plan around
Don't assume low-season pricing and quiet
Accommodation is still at summer-level prices until late in the month, and key weekends can be busier than anything in July.
Don't plan a Valletta day on a big cruise day
Two or three big ships on the same day create a different atmosphere. Check cruise schedules and plan accordingly.
Don't leave beach plans to the last week
First rains and cooler sea typically arrive in the last week or two. Plan beach days for the first half of the month.
