April is the month Malta is at its greenest. Wildflowers, clover, and the short window of lush hillsides you won't see again once the summer sun scorches everything brown. By May it's already starting to look like summer. The light is gentle, the air is warm enough for long walks, and the cultural sites are at their best without the heat of July. The catch is that the sea is still too cold for most visitors to swim, so this is a month for exploring more than lying on a beach.

Year to year: Reliably mild and mostly dry. Recent Aprils have trended warmer, with afternoon highs occasionally reaching the mid-twenties by late month. 2024 ran notably warm and dry for April.
Crowds & timing
Easter week (Holy Week through to Easter Sunday) is the biggest bump. Hotels in Valletta and Sliema fill up three to four weeks out and prices rise meaningfully. Outside Easter, the cities feel comfortably full rather than crowded, and the countryside and Gozo stay quiet.
What to prioritise in April
Walk the historic cities
Valletta, Mdina, and the Three Cities are made for April. Weather cool enough for hours on foot, streets quiet enough to hear your footsteps on the limestone. Mdina at golden hour in April is one of the best experiences on the island.
Get into the countryside
Malta is visibly green in April. Wildflowers, clover, and the short window before the summer sun scorches everything brown. The Dingli Cliffs, Wied il-Għasri on Gozo, and the Majjistral Nature Park are all at their best.
Do Gozo as an overnight
Gozo's inland paths and villages are spectacular in April and almost empty. A two night stay lets you walk the coast from Marsalforn to Wied il-Għasri, eat slowly in Victoria, and catch the Citadel at sunset without crowds.
Plan around Holy Week if you're there for it
Good Friday processions in Valletta, Żebbuġ, and Għaxaq are extraordinary and deeply traditional, not staged for tourists. Easter Sunday morning brings out the figolli (almond-stuffed Easter biscuits) and quiet family lunches. If your trip falls in this week, treat it as an experience in itself.
Beach days can be beautiful, especially for families
On sunny April days (and there are plenty), the beaches come into their own for families with kids. The sea is too cold for proper swimming, but clear water for wading, soft sand for castles, and long walks along the shore, all in a calm, uncrowded setting you won't get once summer arrives. Għadira and Golden Bay are the easiest sandy options; Pretty Bay works well for very small children.
Start boat trips, but know the water's cold
Comino boat tours and the Blue Grotto start running in April. You'll get the views and the caves, but swimming from the boat isn't realistic for most, so treat it as a sightseeing trip rather than a swim trip.
What to skip or plan around
Don't count on proper swimming
The sea is still too cold for most visitors. A quick dip is a shock, and you won't sunbathe dry afterwards. Wading, paddling, and a family beach day all work. Dedicated swimming and sunbathing days should wait for June onwards.
Don't pack only summer clothes
Daytime is warm; evenings, shade, and sea breeze are genuinely cool. Layers, a light jumper, and one light rainproof layer handle every April scenario.
Don't book Easter week at the last minute
Holy Week is Malta's biggest domestic travel period. Hotels in Valletta, Sliema, and St Julian's fill up and raise prices two to four weeks out. If you're travelling this week, book at least a month ahead.
