Lija is a small baroque village in the dead centre of Malta, and for one week each August it puts on one of the shows the island talks about. Its feast of the Transfiguration (Is-Salvatur) falls on 6 August, and the village's St Michael's Fireworks Factory, founded in 1925, is famed among Maltese enthusiasts for the quality of its colour work. How a festa week works
The Maltese village festa is UNESCO-listed intangible heritage, and every one follows a rhythm the whole island knows. Three church evenings (the triduum) build through the week, with band marches and fireworks growing each night. Then comes lejlet il-festa, the eve: in most villages this is the big secular night, with the main march and the headline fireworks late in the evening. The feast day itself belongs to the morning march, the High Mass, and the evening procession, when the titular statue leaves the church to salutes and confetti.
Exact times come from each parish and fireworks society programme, published in the days before the feast. We checked in late July; the 2026 programmes were not out yet, so treat evening timings as the usual pattern rather than gospel.

Getting in and out
Village cores close to traffic for the marches and processions on the eve and the feast day. Arrive before early evening or come by taxi; street parking in the small villages fills hours ahead, so park on the edge and walk in.
With kids
Festas are family events, but petards and ground fireworks are genuinely loud up close. A pair of ear defenders or headphones for small children goes a long way, and the big shows run late, often past 23:00.
Where to watch
The village square by the parish church is the heart of it, with the 1857 Belvedere Tower as the landmark on the way in. Lija is minutes from Attard and Balzan, and a short taxi from Sliema or Valletta, which makes it the easiest famous festa to reach from the main tourist bases.
