Four days in Malta in December, for a group.
Thursday 17 December to Sunday 20 December · relaxed pace
A real plan from our planner, made for a group staying in Buġibba who like beaches and history, getting around by bus, ferry and taxi at a relaxed pace, with an evening flight on the last day. Every stop and meal below came out of the planner for these dates, and none was moved by hand. This plan stays on Malta, so Gozo and Comino are not in it. The planner leaves swimming stops out in December, so there is no beach day.
Your first afternoon starts with a settling-in stretch: bags go to the accommodation, and the first stop is reached only once you have landed and transferred. From there, Valletta's walls appear across the Grand Harbour, then the day moves north to Mellieħa's hilltop village and finishes at the coastal edge of St Paul's Bay, where the light gets warm late in the afternoon.
Getting there
~10:00 · Land + airport transfer
Your activities3 stops · ~1h 40m
Open 06:30 to 19:00
Allow about 10 minutes for the crossing, including the wait and boarding. Fares are €2 single or €3.80 return.
You will see Valletta's limestone walls from the water, which is the way many visitors first meet the city. It is a short, cheap crossing that gives you a dramatic first impression without any pressure.
About 15 min to the next stop
Mellieħa village gives you a quieter counterpoint to the beach, with a large parish church and village squares where Maltese daily life carries on. It suits a relaxed arrival day with room to wander.
The coastal viewpoint looks across to St Paul's Islands, where tradition places St Paul's shipwreck in 60 AD. You can stand at the water's edge and take in the history at your own pace.
